The Publishing Process examines the options open to writers of literary fiction, non-fiction and poetry who want to make their work public. Students gain an understanding of the literary marketplace by becoming acquainted with the independent presses, large publishing houses and self-publishing forums. Each week, they read and review a range of literary journals and investigate on-line resources for writers. Because publication success is dependant on successful writing, the class also focuses on revision, both through practical exercises and workshops and through reading the revisions of published writers. By the end of the course, students will have created an electronic submission log, compiled a file of journal reviews, and polished a manuscript for submission to literary journals.
